Descripción

This is a small, epiphytic or terrestrial shrub in the Ericaceae family, native to the montane cloud forests of Ecuador at high elevations. This species was described by the Ecuagenera research team.

  • Light: Provide bright, filtered light, similar to a canopy setting found in the montane forest. Intense direct sunlight must be strictly avoided to prevent leaf burn.
  • Temperature: It requires Intermediate-Cool conditions with significant daily temperature drops. The ideal range is 55-75°F (13-24°C), necessitating cool nights.
  • Humidity: High ambient humidity (70-90%) is essential, mimicking its cloud forest habitat. Consistent air movement is necessary to prevent fungal issues.
  • Watering: Keep the potting medium constantly moist; never allow it to be saturated or waterlogged. Use a highly porous, well-draining substrate to ensure root aeration.

Additional Notes

The plant produces small flowers followed by decorative, subglobose, berry-like fruits, characteristic of the Sphyrospermum genus. The specific epithet juanpabloi honors Juan Pablo Martinez, associated with the Ecuagenera research team.
