Información

Psychopsis versteegiana

Psychopsis versteegiana brings the dramatic form of a butterfly orchid to a species collection. Its striking flowers rise on slender stems, combining elongated upper segments with a broad lip for a distinctive, butterfly-like silhouette. Long-lived flower spikes can produce successive blooms, turning each developing bud into a fresh moment of anticipation. Give this orchid space above the foliage so its unusual floral shape can be admired without crowding.

Care Guide

  • Light: Provide bright, filtered light. Protect from intense midday sunlight and increase exposure gradually to prevent leaf scorch.
  • Temperature: Maintain intermediate to warm conditions with slightly cooler nights. Protect from frost, cold drafts, and prolonged excessive heat.
  • Watering: Water thoroughly, then allow the medium to approach dryness before watering again. Avoid prolonged drought and constantly saturated roots. Adjust watering to temperature, airflow, and the growing medium.
  • Humidity: Provide moderate to high humidity with gentle, continuous air circulation. Avoid stagnant air and moisture lingering around emerging growths.
  • Potting: Use a snug, well-drained pot with an airy bark-based orchid mix. Keep the rhizome at the surface and leave room for new growth. Avoid oversized containers that remain wet for too long.
  • Feeding: Apply a diluted orchid fertilizer during active growth, following the manufacturer's directions. Flush the medium periodically with clean water to limit salt buildup.
  • Flower Spikes: Preserve green spikes after a flower fades, as the same stem can produce additional blooms. Remove a spike only when it is fully brown and dry. Allow ample clearance for the stems and support them gently if needed.
  • Maintenance: Minimize root disturbance. Repot when the medium deteriorates, preferably as new roots begin developing, and retain firm, healthy older pseudobulbs.

With filtered light, freely draining roots, and careful preservation of its flowering stems, Psychopsis versteegiana offers a memorable botanical display and the pleasure of watching successive buds unfold.
