Phragmipedium Ecuagenera Gigi (Primary Hybrid)

This spectacular slipper orchid hybrid, registered by Ecuagenera in 2018, is a primary cross between the magnificent species Phragmipedium caudatum and the impressive Phragmipedium kovachii. This hybrid masterfully combines the graceful, twisting petals and dramatic form of P. caudatum with the large size and brilliant fuchsia-magenta coloration of P. kovachii. The result is a highly sought-after orchid with a dramatic and intense floral display.

  • Light: Prefers moderate, indirect light. Avoid direct sun, especially during the midday hours, as this can easily scorch the leaves. A bright, east-facing window or a location with filtered light is often ideal for this type of orchid.
  • Temperature: Thrives in intermediate temperatures. Ideal daytime temperatures should range between 18-24°C (65-75°F), with a slight drop at night to 13-18°C (55-65°F). This temperature range helps promote healthy growth and flowering.
  • Humidity: Requires high humidity, ideally between 60-80%. Excellent air circulation is still essential to prevent fungal issues, especially in humid conditions.
  • Watering: This hybrid, like its parents, demands consistent moisture. The potting medium should never be allowed to dry out completely. Water thoroughly and frequently, making sure the pot has good drainage to avoid waterlogged roots.

Additional Notes

  • Floral Characteristics: The flowers of Phragmipedium Ecuagenera Gigi are celebrated for their large size and striking blend of colors. The prominent pouch is a vibrant shade of deep magenta or reddish-purple, while the long, "tail-like" petals extend gracefully outwards with a distinctive twist. This captivating fusion of dramatic form and brilliant color is further enhanced by the plant's ability to produce multiple flowers sequentially on a single stem, providing an extended and enchanting floral display.
