Phragmipedium Carol Kanzer (Primary Hybrid)

This striking hybrid orchid, is a primary cross between Phragmipedium pearcei and Phragmipedium schlimii. Named after Carol Kanzer, it is celebrated for its large, slipper-shaped blooms and dramatic appearance.

  • Light: Prefers moderate, indirect light. Avoid direct sun, especially during the midday hours, as this can easily scorch the leaves. A bright, east-facing window or a location with filtered light is often ideal for its native habitat.
  • Temperature: Thrives in intermediate temperatures, consistent with the conditions found in its native region. Ideal daytime temperatures should range between 18-24°C (65-75°F), with a slight drop at night to 13-18°C (55-65°F).
  • Humidity: Requires high humidity, ideally between 60-80%, which is often naturally occurring in its native habitat. Excellent air circulation is still essential to prevent fungal issues, especially in humid conditions.
  • Watering: This hybrid, like its parents, demands consistent moisture. The potting medium should never be allowed to dry out completely. Water thoroughly and frequently, making sure the pot has good drainage to avoid waterlogged roots. The frequency may need to be adjusted based on the local humidity levels.

Additional Notes

  • Floral Characteristics: Phragmipedium Carol Kanzer is particularly favored for its dramatic and sophisticated appearance. It boasts a prominent, deep red or burgundy pouch that is complemented by white to pink petals and sepals, often with subtle hints of purple or red. The flower size is notably large for its parentage. This orchid is a sequential bloomer, providing an extended floral display that makes it a standout addition to any orchid collection.
