Philodendron melanoneuron

Philodendron melanoneuron

Philodendron melanoneuron is a rare and highly coveted species from the cloud forests of Colombia and Ecuador, where it grows as a hemiepiphyte in intermediate conditions. What sets this species apart is its extraordinary foliage: enormous, velvety leaves in deep, rich green with dramatically dark, almost black primary veins — the feature that gives it its name (melano = black, neuron = nerve). As the leaves mature, they develop an almost suede-like texture that is as remarkable to touch as it is to look at.

Features

  • Foliage: Large, velvety leaves in deep green with striking dark black veining — a truly dramatic combination
  • Texture: Soft, suede-like leaf surface that becomes more pronounced with maturity
  • Plant size: 35–45 cm — a well-established specimen with mature, characterful leaves
  • Growth habit: Hemiepiphytic climber; will climb a moss pole or support as it matures
  • Origin: Colombia and Ecuador — intermediate cloud forests

Care Guide

  • Light: Moderate to bright indirect light; avoid direct sun which can damage the velvety leaves
  • Temperature: Intermediate, between 15°C and 26°C (59°F – 79°F); appreciates cooler nights
  • Watering: Keep evenly moist; allow the top inch of soil to dry between waterings
  • Humidity: High, 65–85%; the velvety leaves thrive in humid conditions
  • Soil: Rich, chunky aroid mix with excellent drainage; provide a moss pole for climbing support

There are philodendrons, and then there is Philodendron melanoneuron. Those dark, dramatic veins cutting across velvety deep-green leaves create a visual impact that stops collectors in their tracks. A 35–45 cm specimen like this one already shows the full character of the species — and it will only become more spectacular as it grows. A true collector’s prize from the Ecuadorian cloud forest.
