Descripción

A cloud forest specialist from Ecuador with one of the most extraordinary floral structures in the orchid family — a densely spotted, hooded flower with filiform tails and a mushroom-shaped, finely papillose lip that mimics a fungal fruiting body to deceive fungus-feeding flies into pollination.

  • Light: Low to medium indirect light; avoid any direct sun. Stable, diffused light mimics the deep cloud forest understory this species inhabits.
  • Temperature: 48–68°F (9–20°C) — Cool grower. Requires consistently cool temperatures year-round; does not tolerate heat above 75°F (24°C). A highland greenhouse or climate-controlled setup is essential.
  • Humidity: 80–95%; very high humidity is non-negotiable. Excellent air movement must accompany high humidity at all times.
  • Watering: Keep the substrate consistently moist — never allow to dry out. Use soft, low-mineral water and ensure perfect drainage.

Additional Notes

Must be grown in an open basket or slatted container — the pendent flower spikes grow downward and cannot bloom in a solid pot. Best grown in fine sphagnum moss. Ships well-established in a small basket or pot.
