Position it within easy viewing distance in a humid orchid collection, where watching developing buds open adds a moment of discovery to your daily growing routine.
Care Guide
-
Light: Provide bright shade or gentle, filtered light. Protect the foliage from harsh direct sunlight.
-
Temperature: Maintain cool to intermediate conditions with slightly cooler nights. Protect from frost, cold drafts, and prolonged excessive heat.
-
Watering: Keep the fine roots evenly moist but well aerated. Water before the medium dries completely and allow excess water to drain freely. Mounted plants require more frequent watering, especially in warm or dry conditions.
-
Humidity: Provide high humidity with steady, gentle air circulation. Avoid stagnant air and prolonged wetness around developing growths.
-
Potting or Mounting: Use a well-drained pot sized to the root system with fine orchid bark and loosely arranged sphagnum, or a mount where dependable humidity and frequent watering are available. Keep stem bases above the medium and avoid tightly packing material around roots.
-
Water Quality: Use low-mineral water when possible and periodically flush the root zone with clean water to reduce salt buildup.
-
Feeding: Apply a very dilute, balanced orchid fertilizer during active growth, following the manufacturer's directions. Reduce feeding when growth slows and avoid fertilizing dry roots.
-
Maintenance: Preserve healthy leafy stems and retain flowering stems while buds are developing. Remove fully dried material gently. Refresh deteriorating medium as new roots emerge, minimizing disturbance to the fine root system.
With filtered light, dependable moisture, and a humid but airy environment, Stelis patens offers a rewarding opportunity to enjoy the fine details of botanical orchid flowers.
