Descripción

This striking aroid is a cultivated variety of a species native to the cloud forests of Central and South America. It is prized for its velvety, heart-shaped leaves and distinct petioles. The 'Eclipse' clone is particularly noted for its darker foliage and a dramatically deep red to lacquered underside of the leaves, enhancing its ornamental appeal.

  • Light: Prefers bright, indirect light. Direct sunlight will scorch the leaves, while insufficient light can lead to leggy growth and duller leaf coloration.
  • Temperature: It has an intermediate to warm climate, consistent temperatures between 65-80°F (18-27°C). Avoid temperatures below 60°F (15°C) and sudden cold drafts, which can stress the plant.
  • Humidity: High humidity is crucial, ideally 70% or higher. A humidifier, pebble tray, or grouping with other plants can help achieve this. Good air circulation is also important.
  • Watering: Keep the potting medium consistently moist but never waterlogged. Allow the top inch or two of soil to dry out before watering again. Overwatering can lead to root rot. Good drainage is essential.

Additional Notes

The defining features of P. verrucosum 'Eclipse' are its intensely dark green leaves, which showcase the characteristic velvety texture of the species, and the vivid, almost metallic dark red to deep crimson undersides. Providing a moss pole or support will encourage larger leaf growth and a more mature climbing habit.
