Descripción

Sobralia macrophylla, meaning "large-leafed Sobralia," is a medium-sized, orchid often found as an epiphyte or terrestrial near waterfalls and riversides in tropical wet forests. It features cane-like stems (up to 1 meter) and large, distinct pleated leaves.

  • Light: It needs bright, filtered light or partial shade. While it can tolerate direct morning sun, protect the foliage from harsh midday sun to avoid scorching.
  • Temperature: This hot-growing species thrives in warm, humid conditions. The ideal range is 68-86°F (20-30°C). Cooler night temperatures can improve flower quality.
  • Humidity: High humidity, between 60% and 80%, is essential due to its moist habitat. Always ensure excellent air movement to prevent spotting or disease in the high-moisture environment.
  • Watering: Water liberally and frequently to keep the well-draining media consistently moist. Since it has no pseudobulbs, it must not dry out. Superior drainage is mandatory to prevent root rot.

Additional Notes

It produces showy, terminal, fleshy, and fragrant flowers up to 4" (10 cm) in size. Individual blooms are short-lived (ephemeral), but appear in succession, providing an extended display.
