Masdevallia caesia f. xanthina Culture

This particular form is highly sought after for its exceptional and rare yellow flowers, a significant departure from the species' typical coloration.

  • Light: This orchid requires very low, indirect light. In its natural cloud forest habitat, it grows in deep shade, so it should be protected from all direct sunlight, which can easily damage its leaves.
  • Temperature: Masdevallia caesia is a cool-to-cold-growing species that needs a significant temperature drop at night. It thrives in daytime temperatures between 15-21°C (60-70°F) and a drop to 7-13°C (45-55°F) at night.
  • Humidity: Extremely high humidity, at or above 80%, is essential.
  • Watering: The substrate or mounting medium must be kept consistently moist. Masdevallia lack pseudobulbs and cannot tolerate drying out completely. Frequent watering is necessary, especially during warm periods.

Additional notes:

The species is typically known for its grayish-blue or greenish-yellow blooms, and the 'xanthina' form's vibrant yellow color is a highly uncommon genetic variant among orchids.
