Descripción

This distinctive, tropical terrestrial herb is a member of the Gesneriad family, currently endemic to the rainforests of Ecuador. It is overwhelmingly valued as a foliage plant, distinguished by its dark, hairy leaves that display purplish-green to black coloration on the top surface and deep purple underneath.

  • Light: Prefers moderate indirect light or dappled shade. It is not tolerant of strong, direct sunlight, which can quickly burn the foliage.
  • Temperature: Warm growing conditions are necessary. Maintain temperatures in the range of 65-85°F (18-29°C). Protect strictly from cold drafts and temperatures below 55°F (13°C).
  • Humidity: Extremely high humidity (70% or more). It thrives best in closed environments such as terrariums, vivariums, or sealed display cases.
  • Watering: Keep the soil evenly moist but never soggy. Allow the very top of the potting medium to dry slightly before watering again with room temperature water. Plant in a loose, well-draining, moisture-retentive mix.

Additional Notes

The flowers are typically tubular, small, and cream-colored or white. The plant's striking, velvety foliage makes it a prized addition to any collection, valued primarily for its exceptional ornamental leaves.
