Thaumatophyllum bipinnatifidum

Thaumatophyllum bipinnatifidum

Thaumatophyllum bipinnatifidum — formerly known and still widely loved as Philodendron bipinnatifidum or the "Split-Leaf Philodendron" — is one of the most iconic and architecturally spectacular aroids in the world. Native to the tropical and subtropical forests of South America, including Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay, and Bolivia, this warm to intermediate-growing species produces enormous, deeply lobed and pinnately divided leaves on long, sturdy petioles, creating a bold, tropical silhouette that transforms any space it inhabits. Its genus name, Thaumatophyllum, means "wonder leaf" in Greek — and one look at a mature specimen explains why.

Features

  • Foliage: Enormous, deeply pinnately lobed leaves in rich glossy green — one of the most dramatic leaf forms in the plant kingdom
  • Growth habit: Large, self-heading (non-climbing) shrub that develops a sturdy trunk-like stem with age
  • Mature size: Can reach 2–3 meters in height and spread indoors; a true statement plant
  • Family: Araceae (formerly classified as Philodendron bipinnatifidum)
  • Origin: South America — tropical and subtropical forests of Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay, and Bolivia

Care Guide

  • Light: Bright indirect light; tolerates lower light but produces its most spectacular leaves in good light
  • Temperature: Warm to intermediate, between 15°C and 30°C (59°F – 86°F); protect from frost
  • Watering: Allow the top 2–3 cm of soil to dry between waterings; drought-tolerant once established
  • Humidity: Moderate to high, 50–70%; more adaptable than most aroids
  • Soil: Rich, well-draining potting mix; repot every 2–3 years as the plant grows

If you want to make a statement, Thaumatophyllum bipinnatifidum is your plant. Those enormous, deeply divided "wonder leaves" bring an unmistakable tropical grandeur to any space — indoors or out. One of the most beloved aroids in the world, now available directly from Ecuagenera. A classic for a reason.
