Information

Pitcairnia sanguinea

A terrestrial bromeliad with long, linear-lanceolate leaves arranged in an open, arching rosette with a strongly contrasting abaxial surface. It produces an upright racemose inflorescence bearing small, delicate flowers followed by globose fruits, offering ornamental interest across multiple seasons.

  • Light: Bright indirect light with 30–50% shade cloth; tolerates brief periods of morning sun but avoid harsh midday exposure, which can scorch the narrow leaf margins.
  • Temperature: 59–79°F (15–26°C); performs well as a cool to intermediate grower with good air circulation and stable conditions.
  • Humidity: 50–70%; adapts to moderate humidity levels but benefits from regular misting during dry periods to maintain leaf vigor.
  • Watering: Water the substrate thoroughly and allow it to partially dry between waterings; avoid filling the central rosette cup, as stagnant water can cause rot at the base.
  • Growth Habit: Terrestrial or rupiculous bromeliad that forms a spreading, arching rosette of strap-like leaves. Mature plants produce a tall, erect inflorescence from the center of the rosette, making it a striking structural accent in tropical collections.
