Beschreibung

This is an epiphytic orchid in the Pleurothallidinae subtribe, native to the cloud forests of Ecuador at high elevations (around 1,900 m). The species was described by the Ecuagenera reseach team.

  • Light: Requires low light, approximating 80% shade, with filtered or diffused light. Direct, intense sunlight must be strictly avoided as it can quickly damage the thin foliage.
  • Temperature: This species needs Cool to Intermediate-Cool conditions with cool nights. The ideal range is 55-75°F (13-24°C), and prolonged exposure to temperatures above 77°F (25°C) should be avoided.
  • Humidity: High ambient humidity (60-80% or higher) is essential to replicate its misty habitat. Constant, strong air movement must be maintained to prevent fungal and bacterial issues.
  • Watering: Since this orchid lacks water-storing pseudobulbs, the potting medium must be kept uniformly moist at all times. Use a highly porous, well-draining substrate, such as Sphagnum moss in a basket, to ensure roots never dry out but are also never saturated.

Additional Notes

The flowers are characteristic of the genus, featuring large, triangular sepals that are typically covered in fine hairs and terminate in long, slender tails. The flower's internal structure often gives the appearance of a "monkey face" or a ghostly figure. The specific epithet doucettei honors Alfonso Doucette for his assistance in its identification.
