Information

Batemannia colleyi

Batemannia colleyi is a captivating epiphytic orchid first described by Lindley in 1834, prized among collectors for its fragrant, short-lived blooms that emerge one at a time from the base of newly formed pseudobulbs. A true gem of the intermediate-warm cloud forest, it rewards patient growers with a flower that is as fleeting as it is beautiful.

Care Guide

  • Light: Prefers low to moderate, indirect light — mimicking the dappled shade of its natural forest habitat. Keep it away from direct sun, which can scorch the leaves.
  • Temperature: Thrives in intermediate conditions with daytime temperatures of 20–26°C (68–79°F) and cooler nights around 14–18°C (57–64°F).
  • Humidity: Loves high humidity in the range of 70–80%. A humidifier, frequent misting, or a well-ventilated terrarium will help recreate its native environment.
  • Watering: Keep the substrate consistently moist but never waterlogged — allow it to dry slightly between waterings. Ease off during the winter months to give the plant a gentle rest.
  • Mounting & Potting: Does well mounted on cork bark or potted in a well-draining epiphytic mix. Its medium-sized pseudobulbs, reaching up to 10 cm, appreciate good airflow around the roots.

Each inflorescence produces a single, sweetly fragrant flower on a 15 cm stem — a fleeting but unforgettable display that makes Batemannia colleyi a cherished addition to any serious orchid collection.
