Information

Aspasia psittacina

Aspasia psittacina is a vibrant and fragrant epiphytic orchid described by Reichenbach in 1878, whose very name tells you everything about its flowers: psittacina means "parrot-like" in Latin, a perfect tribute to the bold yellow blooms splashed with rich red-brown markings that give this species its unmistakable, exotic character. What makes it even more special is that these eye-catching flowers are also fragrant, and they open in succession over a long blooming period — meaning you get weeks of color and scent rather than a brief floral moment. Compact and well-suited to small pots, it is an ideal species for growers with limited space who refuse to compromise on impact.

Care Guide

  • Light: Bright, indirect light. It can tolerate gentle morning or late afternoon sun, but avoid strong midday exposure to protect the foliage and flowers.
  • Temperature: Intermediate to warm. Daytime temperatures of 20–30°C (68–86°F) with nights staying above 15°C (59°F) keep this species thriving.
  • Humidity: High humidity of 70–80% is preferred. A humidifier, regular misting, or a pebble tray will help maintain the lush, humid conditions it loves.
  • Watering: Water frequently during active growth, allowing the substrate to dry slightly between waterings. Reduce frequency in winter.
  • Potting: Prefers small pots — slightly snug conditions encourage better flowering and root health.
  • Fragrance: Yes — the flowers are fragrant and bloom in succession over an extended season.

Bold, fragrant, and long-blooming, Aspasia psittacina is a gem of the genus — grown with care at Ecuagenera and ready to bring parrot-bright color and sweet scent to your collection.
