Information

Phragmipedium Apollo

Phragmipedium Apollo brings the distinctive floral architecture of a slipper orchid to a collector's display. Its pouch-shaped lip creates a sculptural focal point above fans of strap-like green leaves, inviting a closer look at the flower's form and detail. Following a developing spike from the first bud to an open bloom is a rewarding part of growing this hybrid. Flower color, markings, and size can vary between individual plants and growing conditions.

Care Guide

  • Light: Provide bright, filtered light. Protect the foliage from harsh midday sunlight and increase light exposure gradually.
  • Temperature: Maintain intermediate conditions with slightly cooler nights. Avoid frost, cold drafts, and prolonged excessive heat.
  • Watering: Keep the medium evenly moist, avoiding prolonged complete drying. Water thoroughly and drain freely, maintaining an airy root environment rather than stagnant, compacted conditions.
  • Water Quality: Use rainwater, reverse-osmosis water, or another low-mineral source when possible. Flush the medium regularly to reduce salt buildup.
  • Humidity: Provide moderate to high humidity with gentle, continuous air circulation.
  • Potting: Use a well-drained, moisture-retentive slipper orchid mix, such as bark, perlite, and sphagnum moss. Choose a container with drainage holes and keep the leaf bases above the medium.
  • Feeding: Apply a diluted orchid fertilizer during active growth, following the manufacturer's directions. Avoid concentrated fertilizer, which can damage sensitive roots.
  • Maintenance: Avoid leaving water trapped in the crown overnight. Refresh decomposing medium as new roots develop, handling the roots gently. Retain a green flower spike while it continues producing buds; remove it once flowering has finished and the spike has dried.

With filtered light, clean water, and dependable moisture, Phragmipedium Apollo adds elegant floral form and an engaging growing experience to a thoughtfully maintained slipper orchid collection.
