Information

Trichoceros antennifer

A cool-growing epiphytic orchid endemic to Ecuador, producing flowers that are among the most extraordinary examples of insect mimicry in the plant kingdom. The broad, flat sepals and petals frame a highly elaborate labellum with a densely hirsute surface and two articulated, antenna-like lateral appendages that precisely mimic the body and antennae of a fly — deceiving male dipterans into pseudocopulation and achieving pollination without offering any reward.

  • Light: Bright indirect light with 40–60% shade cloth; tolerates some morning sun, which encourages strong inflorescence production.
  • Temperature: 50–70°F (10–21°C); a cool to intermediate grower that requires stable, mild temperatures and excellent air circulation.
  • Humidity: 65–85%; consistent humidity supports healthy pseudobulb development and repeat flowering.
  • Watering: Water thoroughly and allow the medium to dry slightly between waterings; never allow roots to sit in standing water.

Additional Notes

Best grown in a pot with a coarse, well-draining bark mix and strong air movement. One of the most biologically fascinating orchids in cultivation, prized by collectors for its extraordinary fly-mimicking floral structure. Shipped bare root in well-established condition.
