Beschreibung

Sobralia atropubescens, is a terrestrial orchid from the humid mountain forests of Central and South America. It is characterized by its erect, cane-like stems covered in dark red hairs and thin, pleated (plicate) leaves.

  • Light: Prefers medium to bright, indirect light. Provide strong, filtered light for 12–14 hours daily, but never direct sun, which will damage the pleated leaves.
  • Temperature: A warm to cool grower that prefers stable, intermediate conditions. The ideal range is 61-82°F (16-28°C). Protect it from temperatures dropping below 58°F (14°C).
  • Humidity: Requires high humidity, around 68-85%, for consistent health. Excellent air movement is essential to prevent spotting or rot in the high-humidity environment.
  • Watering: Must be grown in a well-draining, moisture-retentive terrestrial mix. Keep the medium consistently moist and be careful not to let the plant dry out completely or become waterlogged. Consistency is key.

Additional Notes

The orchid produces terminal, successive blooms that are typically ephemeral, lasting only a day or two. The flowers feature a characteristic tubular lip that clasps the column. The plant grows in a clump-forming (caespitose) habit.
