Information

Sinningia lineata

Sinningia lineata is a tuberous Brazilian member of the gesneriad family, admired for its tubular flowers and textured green foliage. Its warm-toned blooms feature fine markings that invite a closer look, offering a distinctive alternative to familiar flowering houseplants. Watching fresh shoots emerge from the tuber and develop into a flowering plant makes this species especially rewarding for growers who enjoy following a plant's seasonal rhythm.

Care Guide

  • Light: Provide bright, indirect light. Gentle morning sun may be suitable after gradual acclimation, but protect from harsh midday sunlight.
  • Temperature: Maintain mild to warm conditions during active growth. Protect from frost, cold drafts, and prolonged excessive heat.
  • Watering: Water thoroughly while the plant is actively growing, then let the surface of the medium dry slightly before watering again. Keep the root zone lightly moist rather than saturated, and empty saucers promptly. Avoid pouring water directly onto the tuber's growing point.
  • Humidity: Provide moderate humidity with gentle air circulation. Avoid frequent misting of foliage and flowers or keeping the plant in a stagnant, constantly wet enclosure.
  • Growing Medium: Use a loose, well-drained potting mix, such as a peat- or coir-based blend amended with perlite and fine bark. Choose a pot with drainage holes and avoid burying the tuber deeply.
  • Feeding: Apply a dilute, balanced fertilizer during active growth, following the manufacturer's directions. Pause feeding if the plant becomes dormant.
  • Seasonal Rest: If leaves and stems naturally die back, gradually reduce watering and keep the resting tuber mostly dry, with only enough occasional moisture to prevent severe shriveling. Do not force a dry rest while the plant remains actively leafy. Resume watering cautiously when new shoots appear.
  • Maintenance: Remove faded flowers and fully dried stems gently. Refresh the growing medium when necessary, taking care not to damage the tuber or emerging shoots.

With bright filtered light, excellent drainage, and care adjusted to its growth cycle, Sinningia lineata brings colorful blooms and the fascination of tuberous growth to a thoughtfully tended plant collection.
