Information

Barbosella cucullata

Barbosella cucullata is a captivating miniature epiphytic orchid described by Schlechter in 1918, native to the cool cloud forests of the Andes. Despite its tiny stature, it is a plant of remarkable character — producing charming, hooded (cucullate) flowers in yellow with a contrasting brown or purple lip that are disproportionately eye-catching for such a small plant. The name cucullata refers directly to this distinctive hooded form, a detail that makes it instantly recognizable among miniature orchid enthusiasts. Cool-growing, humidity-loving, and perfectly suited to terrarium culture, it is an ideal species for collectors who want to make the most of limited space without sacrificing botanical interest.

Care Guide

  • Light: Low to moderate indirect light. Avoid direct sun, which will scorch its delicate foliage. A shaded terrarium or greenhouse bench is ideal.
  • Temperature: Cool to intermediate. Daytime temperatures of 18–27°C (64–80°F) with cooler nights of 12–15°C (54–59°F) replicate its Andean cloud forest habitat.
  • Humidity: High humidity of 70–80% is essential. A terrarium or enclosed humid environment is highly recommended for this cool-growing miniature.
  • Watering: Keep the substrate consistently moist but not soggy. Allow it to dry very slightly between waterings and reduce frequency during winter.
  • Mounting: Grows beautifully mounted on cork bark or in a small pot with a well-draining substrate — good airflow around the roots is important.

Small in size but big in personality, Barbosella cucullata is a delightful miniature for terrarium growers and cool-climate collectors — grown with care at Ecuagenera and ready to bring Andean cloud forest charm to your collection.
