Amorphophallus titanum, the legendary Corpse Flower, is one of the most extraordinary and botanically significant plants on Earth. Native to the tropical rainforests of Sumatra, Indonesia, and first described by (Becc.) Becc., published in Bull. Soc. Tosc. Ortic. 4(2): 46 (1879), this intermediate to warm-growing member of the Araceae family holds the record for producing the largest unbranched inflorescence in the plant kingdom — documented at over 3 meters tall at the Botanical Garden of Bonn in 2003. Renowned worldwide for the powerful, pungent odor it emits during flowering to attract pollinators, a specimen at the Royal Botanic Gardens of Kew was famously awarded the title of the world's most malodorous plant in 2011. Growing from a massive corm, the plant alternates between producing a single, enormous compound leaf and, when mature, its spectacular and fleeting inflorescence — a once-in-a-lifetime botanical event.
