Information

Coelogyne flaccida

Coelogyne flaccida is a graceful Himalayan species that flowers in late winter and early spring, when its slender pseudobulbs send out pendent sprays of creamy white blooms. Each flower carries a lip marked in warm yellow and soft brown, and a mature plant can hang a dozen or more along a single arching raceme. The scent is strong and distinctive, sweet and slightly musky, filling a room on a sunny morning.

Care Guide

  • Light: Bright, indirect light. Gentle morning sun encourages flowering, but avoid hot direct sun on the foliage.
  • Water: Water generously while new growths and roots are developing, then reduce sharply once the pseudobulbs mature, keeping it nearly dry through the winter rest.
  • Humidity: 50-70%, paired with steady air movement.
  • Temperature: Cool to intermediate, 12-26°C (54-79°F), with cooler winter nights to set buds.
  • Growing medium: A free-draining bark mix in a basket or hanging pot, which lets the pendent flower spikes fall clear of the container.
  • Feeding: Balanced orchid fertilizer at half strength every two weeks in active growth, suspended during the winter rest.

Easy-going, vigorous, and generous with its fragrant cascades, Coelogyne flaccida is a fine choice for a cool growing space or a bright sheltered porch. Grow it in a basket, give it a dry winter, and enjoy one of the most reliable spring displays in the genus.
