Description

Lepanthes cymbium

This miniature epiphytic orchid species is native to the humid Andean cloud forests, where it grows on moss-covered branches in constantly moist environments. Lepanthes cymbium is appreciated by collectors for its tiny yet intricate flowers and compact growth habit, often blooming successively from the base of the leaf.

  • Light: Provide low to medium filtered light (50–70% shade) similar to the understory of cloud forests. Avoid direct sunlight, which can easily damage the delicate leaves.
  • Temperature: This species prefers cool to intermediate conditions. Ideal temperatures are 15–22°C (59–72°F) during the day, with a cooler night drop around 10–15°C (50–59°F).
  • Humidity: Maintain 70–90% humidity with constant gentle air movement. High humidity is essential for healthy growth and flowering in most Lepanthes species.
  • Watering: Keep the plant consistently moist but never waterlogged. Because Lepanthes roots are very fine and lack water-storage structures, the plant should never dry out completely. Mounted plants may require daily watering or frequent misting.

Additional notes:
Lepanthes cymbium is an excellent choice for terrariums, orchidariums, or cool humid greenhouses where stable moisture and airflow can be maintained. The plant remains very small, making it ideal for collectors of miniature orchids.

For best results, grow it mounted on cork or tree fern with a small layer of sphagnum moss, allowing the roots to stay evenly moist while still receiving good airflow. Like many Lepanthes, it can produce successive blooms throughout the year when humidity and temperature remain stable.
