Description

Description

This is a natural hybrid orchid native to the cloud forests of Ecuador, thriving at high elevations where its parent species overlap. This species was described by the Ecuagenera research team, along with Saul Ruiz and A. Doucette.

  • Light: Requires low light, approximating 80% shade, with filtered or diffused light. Direct, intense sunlight must be strictly avoided as it can quickly damage the thin foliage.
  • Temperature: It requires Cool to Intermediate-Cool conditions with cool nights. The ideal range is 55-75°F (13-24°C), and prolonged exposure to temperatures above 77°F (25°C) should be avoided.
  • Humidity: High ambient humidity (60-80% or higher) is essential to replicate its misty habitat. Constant, strong air movement must be maintained to prevent fungal and bacterial issues.
  • Watering: Since this orchid lacks water-storing pseudobulbs, the potting medium must be kept uniformly moist at all times. Use a highly porous, well-draining substrate, such as Sphagnum moss in a basket, since its inflorescences are pendulous.

Additional Notes

As a natural hybrid between Dracula chimaera and Dracula sodiroi, the flower shape is intermediate, featuring the large, hairy, long-tailed sepals of the genus, often with coloration mixing traits from both parents. The name honors Saul Ruiz.
