Information

Comparettia x maloi

A natural hybrid epiphytic orchid from the cloud forests of Ecuador, producing loose racemes of showy flowers with a broad, cordate labellum and strongly veined sepals with curved, pointed apices. A long, curved spur extends behind each flower — the defining structural trait of the genus — giving the inflorescence a graceful, animated silhouette.

  • Light: Bright indirect light with 50–70% shade cloth; avoid direct sun, which can desiccate the small pseudobulbs and foliage.
  • Temperature: 55–75°F (13–24°C); a cool to intermediate grower that benefits from stable, mild temperatures and good air movement.
  • Humidity: 70–90%; very high humidity is essential to prevent desiccation of the compact root system and pseudobulbs.
  • Watering: Keep the mount or medium evenly moist; never allow to dry out completely, as the compact pseudobulbs have limited water storage capacity.

Additional Notes

Comparettia × maloi is best grown mounted on cork or tree fern to accommodate its compact, pendant habit and fine root system. Shipped bare root in well-established condition, ready to mount upon arrival.
