Description

This is an epiphytic shrub from the Ericaceae family, native to the high-altitude cloud forests of Ecuador, and was named in honor of Alex Portilla. It is prized for its showy, waxen, tubular flowers and requires stable cool temperatures and high moisture to simulate its native habitat.

  • Light: Requires bright, indirect light or filtered sunlight to encourage blooming. Direct sun exposure must be avoided, but ample filtered light promotes health and flowering.
  • Temperature: This plant thrives in cool to intermediate conditions, requiring a significant nocturnal temperature drop. Daytime temperatures should ideally range from 65-77°F (18-25°C), with a night drop typically down to 50-61°F (10-16°C).
  • Humidity: High humidity is crucial, ideally 60-80% or higher, to replicate its cloud forest habitat. The growing environment should feel fresh and moist at all times.
  • Watering: Keep the growing medium consistently moist, but ensure it is never waterlogged. Water thoroughly when the top layer begins to feel slightly dry, and use purified or soft water to prevent mineral buildup.
  • Ventilation: Excellent, constant air circulation is critical for all Ceratostema species. Stagnant air in high-humidity environments will quickly lead to fungal growth, spotting, and rot.

This species produces vibrant, tubular, pendent flowers that are highly ornamental and adapted for hummingbird pollination.
