Information

Porroglossum olivaceum 'Gig'

A captivating miniature from the Andean cloud forests, bearing successive flowers with olive-toned, heavily textured sepals tipped with characteristic motile tails — the signature trap mechanism of the genus. The lip snaps shut on contact, a remarkable adaptation that makes this species as fascinating to observe as it is to grow.

  • Light: Bright indirect light with 50–70% shade cloth; avoid any direct sun exposure, which quickly damages the delicate foliage.
  • Temperature: 45–65°F (7–18°C); a Cool grower with a minimum tolerance around 42°F (6°C). Consistent cool nights are essential for long-term health.
  • Humidity: 80–90%; high humidity is critical — use a cool-mist humidifier or grow in a terrarium or cool greenhouse environment.
  • Watering: Keep the medium evenly moist at all times; never allow to dry out completely, but ensure excellent drainage to prevent root rot.

Additional Notes

Best grown in a small pot with a fine, well-draining mix (fine bark with perlite or sphagnum) in a cool, humid environment. This select clone 'Gig' is shipped bare root and well-established, grown at Ecuagenera's cloud forest nursery in Ecuador.
