Information

Piper artanthe

A tropical foliage plant from the cloud forests of South America in the Piperaceae family, producing ovate-acuminate leaves with an extraordinarily pronounced bullate-reticulate texture. The deeply sunken pinnate venation creates a dense three-dimensional relief across the entire leaf surface — one of the most striking foliar textures in the genus and the primary ornamental feature of this species.

  • Light: Low to medium indirect light with 60–80% shade cloth; avoid direct sun, which can flatten the bullate texture and damage the soft leaf surface.
  • Temperature: 55–75°F (13–24°C); a cool to intermediate grower that benefits from stable, mild temperatures and good air circulation.
  • Humidity: 70–90%; high humidity is essential to maintain the pronounced leaf texture and support healthy stem development.
  • Watering: Keep the medium evenly moist but never waterlogged; allow the surface to dry slightly between waterings to prevent stem rot.

Additional Notes

Best grown in a well-draining, humus-rich mix with added perlite and strong air movement. Avoid wetting the foliage directly to prevent fungal issues on the textured leaf surface. Shipped as a well-established plant, ready to pot upon arrival.
