Information

Oncidium sphacelatum f. flava

A rare and collectible flava form of this fragrant epiphyte from the cloud forests of Central America, producing long, arching spikes with numerous medium-sized flowers. The lanceolate sepals and petals have a maculate texture with an undulate, irregular margin, while the very broad bilobed lip features an undulate margin and a contrasting orange central callus with fine spotting.

  • Light: Bright indirect light with 40–60% shade cloth; avoid direct midday sun, which can stress the pseudobulbs and foliage.
  • Temperature: 54–72°F (12–22°C); an intermediate to cool grower that benefits from a nighttime temperature drop to encourage spike initiation and enhance fragrance.
  • Humidity: 60–80%; consistent moisture supports vigorous growth and the production of long, floriferous spikes.
  • Watering: Water thoroughly and allow the medium to approach dryness between waterings; never allow roots to sit in standing water.

Additional Notes

This flava form is a rare find, prized by collectors for its unusual pigmentation pattern. Best grown in a medium bark mix with good drainage and airflow. Plants are shipped bare root, well established, and ready to adapt quickly to their new growing environment.
