Information

Lycaste Gigi Portilla

A primary hybrid of Lyc. tricolor × Lyc. macrophylla, two Andean species known for their large, waxy flowers and strong fragrance. The result is a vigorous plant with well-formed pseudobulbs, broad pleated leaves, and flowers that inherit the substance and symmetry of both parents.

  • Light: Bright indirect light with 50–60% shade cloth; avoid direct sun, which scorches the broad leaves and stresses pseudobulbs.
  • Temperature: 55–75°F (13–24°C); an intermediate grower that benefits from a cooler, drier rest in winter to trigger blooming.
  • Humidity: 60–80%; maintain good air circulation to prevent fungal issues on the large leaf surface.
  • Watering: Water freely during active growth; reduce significantly once pseudobulbs mature and leaves begin to drop, allowing the mix to dry between waterings during rest.

Additional Notes

Plants are grown in a well-draining bark and perlite mix and shipped bare root, well established at approximately 30 cm. Pot promptly upon arrival and water thoroughly to rehydrate the roots.
