Information

Bulbophyllum abbreviatum f. orange

A visually striking epiphyte from the tropical forests of New Guinea, producing perfectly circular umbels with numerous flowers arranged radially like a sunwheel, their broad, ovate sepals fanning outward from a dark burgundy center of contrasting floral structures. It grows with a creeping rhizome and compact pseudobulbs, each topped by a single firm, leathery leaf.

  • Light: Bright indirect light with 40–50% shade cloth; tolerates slightly more light than many Bulbophyllum species.
  • Temperature: 65–86°F (18–30°C); a Warm grower with a minimum tolerance around 60°F (16°C).
  • Humidity: 70–85%; mount or grow in a basket with good air movement to keep roots and rhizome healthy.
  • Watering: Water frequently during active growth, allowing the medium to approach dryness briefly between waterings; avoid prolonged saturation at the roots.

Additional Notes

Best grown mounted on cork or tree fern, or in a wide shallow basket with a coarse, open bark mix. Plants are shipped bare root and well-established.
