Information

Attalea colenda

Attalea colenda, known as the Corozo Palm or Palma Corozo, is a magnificent and ecologically vital palm endemic to the coastal lowlands of Ecuador and Colombia. One of Ecuador's most iconic native palms, it is a towering species with a robust trunk and a crown of long, gracefully arching feather fronds that create a dramatic tropical silhouette. It holds particular importance as a keystone species in its native ecosystem, providing food and habitat for a wide range of wildlife, and has long been valued by local communities for its oil-rich fruits — the seeds yield a high-quality vegetable oil comparable to coconut oil. Increasingly rare in the wild due to habitat loss, growing Attalea colenda is both a botanical privilege and a small act of conservation.

Care Guide

  • Light: Full sun. This coastal palm thrives with maximum light and warmth — ideal for open tropical gardens and large sunny spaces.
  • Temperature: Intermediate. Prefers temperatures of 16–28°C (61–82°F). Best suited to tropical and subtropical climates; protect from frost.
  • Humidity: Moderate to high humidity is appreciated, reflecting its origins in Ecuador's humid coastal forests.
  • Watering: Water regularly during active growth, keeping the soil moist but well-drained. Once established, it develops good resilience to variable moisture conditions.
  • Soil: A deep, fertile, well-draining tropical mix will support the strong root system this large palm develops over time.

Majestic, ecologically significant, and native to Ecuador's threatened coastal forests, Attalea colenda is a palm of genuine importance and beauty — grown with expertise at Ecuagenera and offered in excellent condition for collectors who value both rarity and conservation.
