Alocasia infernalis 'Black Magic'

Alocasia infernalis 'Black Magic'

Alocasia infernalis 'Black Magic' is one of the darkest and most dramatic foliage plants in existence. Native to the rainforests of Borneo, this intermediate-growing species from the Araceae family earns its name — infernalis meaning "of the underworld" — through its extraordinarily dark, near-black leaves with a deep burgundy to purple iridescent sheen that shifts hauntingly in different light conditions. The 'Black Magic' cultivar represents the darkest selection of this already remarkable species, producing thick, glossy, arrow-shaped leaves of an almost supernatural depth of color. A true collector's obsession and one of the most visually striking plants available.

Care Guide

  • Light: Bright, indirect light; good light levels are essential to bring out the full depth of the dark iridescent coloration — avoid direct sun which can scorch the leaves, and avoid very low light which diminishes the dramatic color
  • Temperature: Intermediate; ideal temperatures 18–27°C (65–80°F); sensitive to cold — protect from drafts and temperatures below 15°C (59°F)
  • Watering: Allow the top inch of soil to dry between waterings; water thoroughly then allow to drain well; avoid waterlogging which can quickly cause root rot
  • Humidity: High humidity essential, ideally 65–85%; reflects its humid Bornean rainforest origins — a humidifier or enclosed growing cabinet gives the best results
  • Substrate: Very well-draining, airy mix; a blend of coco coir, perlite, and orchid bark is ideal — excellent root aeration is critical for this species

Alocasia infernalis 'Black Magic' is the ultimate dark foliage collector's plant — its near-black, iridescent leaves are among the most dramatic and otherworldly in the entire plant kingdom. A rare and extraordinary Bornean species from Ecuagenera, grown with care in Ecuador.
