Information

Ornithidium sophronitis (Big)

A creeping, mat-forming miniature epiphyte from the cloud forests of Ecuador, prized for its spectacular mass-blooming displays. The plant produces clusters of small, rounded flowers nestled directly among the dense, succulent foliage, with neatly cupped sepals and petals surrounding a distinctly contrasting, fleshy lip.

  • Light: Bright indirect light with 50–60% shade cloth; avoid direct sun, which can desiccate the compact, succulent leaves.
  • Temperature: 58–72°F (14–22°C); an intermediate grower that benefits from moderate temperature stability and good nighttime cooling.
  • Humidity: 65–85%; high ambient humidity is essential to support the dense mat growth and prolific flowering.
  • Watering: Keep the mount or mix evenly moist; this species prefers not to dry out completely between waterings due to its fine, shallow root system.

Additional Notes

This large-sized division forms a full, established mat ideal for mounting on cork bark or tree fern, or growing in a shallow basket with sphagnum moss. An exceptional specimen for any intermediate collection. Ships bare-root in excellent condition.
