Information

Epidendrum Alex Portilla

A floriferous hybrid of Epi. embreei × Epi. hemiscleria, two reed-stem species from the Andean cloud forests of South America. The arching racemes carry nodding, bell-shaped flowers with reflexed sepals and a fringed, trilobed lip.

  • Light: Bright indirect light with 50–60% shade cloth; avoid harsh direct sun, which can burn the foliage.
  • Temperature: 50–68°F (10–20°C); a cool grower that thrives with cool nights and good air circulation.
  • Humidity: 70–85%; consistent moisture in the air supports robust cane development and bloom production.
  • Watering: Water thoroughly and allow the mix to approach dryness between waterings; never leave roots sitting in standing water.

Additional Notes

A primary hybrid combining the pendant floral habit of two Andean cloud forest species. Grow in a well-draining bark-based mix or in a basket to accommodate the arching inflorescences. Ships bare root, well-established.
