Information

Platycerium andinum

Platycerium andinum is a South American staghorn fern with an impressive architectural presence. Its long, pendulous fertile fronds contrast with the shield fronds that develop around the base, creating a layered silhouette particularly well suited to a mounted display. A fine covering of pale hairs lends the foliage a softly silvery appearance. Given room to mature, this epiphytic fern turns fresh growth into a striking living sculpture.

Care Guide

  • Light: Provide bright, filtered light with protection from intense midday sun. Avoid deep shade and introduce brighter conditions gradually.
  • Temperature: Maintain mild to warm conditions with good ventilation. Protect from frost, cold drafts, and prolonged excessive heat.
  • Watering: Thoroughly wet the root pad, then allow it to approach dryness before watering again. Adjust frequency to temperature, airflow, and the amount of mounting material; avoid keeping the roots constantly saturated.
  • Humidity: Provide moderate to high humidity together with gentle air movement. Humid air should not come at the expense of drainage and ventilation.
  • Mounting: Secure to a sturdy board or cork mount with a modest pad of sphagnum moss or another airy, moisture-retentive material around the roots. Keep the growing point uncovered and allow space for hanging fronds and future growth.
  • Feeding: Apply a balanced liquid fertilizer at reduced strength during active growth, following the manufacturer's directions. Occasionally rinse the root pad with clean water to reduce salt buildup.
  • Maintenance: Leave aging brown shield fronds in place, as they form part of the plant's protective base. Do not rub away the pale hairs on the foliage. Brown spore patches on mature fertile fronds are a normal part of fern reproduction.

With filtered light, an airy mount, and a balanced wet-to-dry watering rhythm, Platycerium andinum brings graceful movement and sculptural foliage to a carefully maintained fern collection.
