Information

Microgramma reptans

Microgramma reptans is a small creeping fern whose slender rhizomes spread across bark and other surfaces, producing a delicate layer of green fronds. Its epiphytic growth habit makes it an appealing choice for humid terrariums, planted displays, and small mounts. Watching new fronds emerge along the wandering rhizomes brings a subtle sense of movement to a miniature tropical landscape. Unlike flowering plants, this fern reproduces by spores.

Care Guide

  • Light: Provide soft, filtered light or bright shade. Avoid harsh direct sunlight, which can scorch the fronds and dry the plant quickly.
  • Temperature: Maintain moderate to warm conditions. Protect from frost, cold drafts, and excessive heat.
  • Watering: Keep the root zone lightly and consistently moist without leaving it waterlogged. Mounted plants may require more frequent watering than potted specimens.
  • Humidity: Provide high humidity with gentle air circulation. Ventilate terrariums to prevent stagnant conditions.
  • Mounting and Potting: Grow on cork or bark with a thin layer of sphagnum, or use a shallow container with an airy, moisture-retentive mix. Leave the creeping rhizomes on the surface rather than burying them.
  • Feeding: Apply a very dilute balanced fertilizer occasionally during active growth, following the manufacturer's directions. Avoid concentrated fertilizer and rinse the growing medium periodically to reduce salt buildup.
  • Maintenance: Guide spreading rhizomes toward available growing space and remove damaged fronds carefully. Avoid disturbing newly attached roots unnecessarily.

With humid air, gentle light, and dependable moisture, Microgramma reptans adds fine-textured greenery to a tropical display, softening bark and creating a natural backdrop for other small plants.
