Information

Alocasia chaii

Alocasia chaii is a rare and striking tropical species from the Araceae family, native to the rainforests of Borneo. An intermediate to warm-growing Alocasia, it is prized for its bold, elongated leaves with a distinctive velvety texture and prominent veining — a combination that gives the foliage a rich, sculptural quality rarely seen in other species. Named in honor of botanist Chai Poh Chin, Alocasia chaii is a relatively recently described species that has quickly captured the attention of serious tropical plant collectors worldwide.

Care Guide

  • Light: Bright, indirect light; avoid direct sun which can scorch the velvety leaves — consistent filtered light best maintains the foliage quality and color
  • Temperature: Intermediate to warm; ideal temperatures 18–28°C (65–82°F); protect from cold drafts and temperatures below 15°C (59°F)
  • Watering: Allow the top inch of soil to dry between waterings; water thoroughly then allow to drain well; avoid waterlogging which can cause root rot
  • Humidity: High humidity essential, ideally 65–85%; reflects its humid Bornean rainforest origins — use a humidifier or enclosed growing cabinet for best results
  • Substrate: Very well-draining, airy mix; a blend of coco coir, perlite, and orchid bark is ideal — excellent root aeration is key to success with this species

Alocasia chaii is a rare and botanically significant species that brings the wild beauty of Borneo's rainforests into any tropical collection. Its velvety, sculptural foliage and collector's rarity make it a standout new arrival from Ecuagenera, grown with care in Ecuador.
