Description

Description

This spectacular species produces enormous flowers that can reach up to 15 cm in length, making it one of the largest in the genus. The striking blooms feature deep burgundy to purple-red coloring with prominent veining, emerging on long peduncles that extend well beyond the compact foliage.

  • Light: Bright shade to filtered light conditions. Avoid direct sunlight which can scorch leaves and stress the plant.
  • Temperature: Cool grower: daytime temperatures of 50-70°F (10-21°C) with nighttime drops to 45-55°F (7-13°C). Consistent cool conditions are essential for healthy growth and flowering.
  • Humidity: Maintain 70-85% relative humidity with excellent air circulation to prevent fungal issues. Use fans to ensure constant gentle air movement around the plant.
  • Watering: Keep media consistently moist throughout the year, never allowing it to dry completely. Reduce watering frequency slightly during winter months while maintaining humidity levels.

Additional Notes

Native to the cloud forests of Ecuador at elevations of 2,000-2,500 meters, this species demands cool temperatures and high humidity to thrive. Best grown mounted on tree fern or cork bark, or in small pots with fine bark mix or sphagnum moss.
