Named for the intricate, script-like markings that cover its flowers, Masd. hieroglyphica is a compact species that blooms successively on slender stems throughout the year. Each flower displays the classic triangular Masdevallia form with fused sepals tapering into delicate elongated tails.

• Light: Low to moderate indirect light with 65–75% shade cloth; protect from any direct sun, which causes rapid leaf burn in cool-growing Masdevallias.
• Temperature: Cool grower. Daytime temperatures of 58–68°F (14–20°C) and nighttime lows of 48–55°F (9–13°C); sustained warmth above 72°F (22°C) is detrimental to long-term health.
• Humidity: 75–90% relative humidity with constant gentle airflow; a humidifier or enclosed cool-growing chamber is strongly recommended to prevent desiccation.
• Watering: Keep the medium evenly and consistently moist; never allow roots to dry out. Water every 3–5 days with excellent drainage to avoid root rot.

Additional Notes

The epithet hieroglyphica refers to the complex markings on the sepals. Best grown in small pots with fine bark or sphagnum moss, or mounted on cork bark.
