Description

Description

A large, well-established division of this spectacular epiphyte from the cloud forests of Ecuador, with robust, compressed pseudobulbs bearing broad, undulating, glossy ovate leaves. The plant blooms in extraordinary mass displays: dozens of pendant, ovoid closed flowers emerge simultaneously in dense clusters directly from the pseudobulb base, each densely spotted with vivid red dots on a cream-yellow ground — an unmatched floral spectacle within the genus.

  • Light: Moderate indirect light with 55–65% shade cloth; avoid direct sun, which can stress the broad, soft foliage.
  • Temperature: 58–72°F (14–22°C); an intermediate grower that benefits from consistent temperatures and good airflow.
  • Humidity: 65–85%; high humidity supports vigorous growth and the prolific simultaneous production of multiple flower clusters.
  • Watering: Water thoroughly and allow the mix to approach dryness between waterings; well-developed pseudobulbs provide moderate drought tolerance.

Additional Notes

Blooms repeatedly throughout the year in spectacular mass clusters from the pseudobulb base. Best grown in a wide, shallow pot with coarse bark or sphagnum moss to accommodate the spreading pseudobulb habit. One of the most visually dramatic species in the genus. Ships bare-root in excellent condition.
