Description

Description

Sobralia fragrans is a medium-sized epiphytic orchid from Central and South American tropical forests, recognized for its erect, reed-like stems and distinct plicate (pleated), fleshy leaves.

  • Light: needs part shade or moderate, indirect light. Bright light is necessary for blooming, but harsh direct sun should be avoided to prevent leaf scorching.
  • Temperature: It thrives in intermediate to warm conditions, ideally ranging from 60-80°F (16-27°C). A slight nighttime temperature drop is beneficial for encouraging flower development.
  • Humidity: High humidity, between 60-80%, is essential due to its native environment. Good air movement must be maintained to prevent leaf spotting or disease in high-moisture conditions.
  • Watering: Water frequently and liberally as the plant needs consistent moisture and lacks water storage. Use a well-draining media and ensure excellent drainage to allow the mix to approach dryness quickly without ever becoming completely desiccated or stagnant.

Additional Notes

The showy, fragrant terminal flowers measure up to 1.5" (4 cm). Individual blooms are short-lived, lasting only one or two days, but they appear reliably during the spring and summer months, providing a lovely, if brief, floral display.
