Porroglossum doucetteanum

This is a miniature epiphytic orchid from the Andean cloud forests, formally described by the research team from Ecuagenera. Like all species in its genus, it is famous for its active labellum (lip), which is a unique trap mechanism that snaps shut when touched by an insect pollinator.

• Light: Prefers shady conditions or soft, filtered, low-to-medium light. In its natural habitat. Too much light can cause leaves to yellow or burn.
• Temperature: Requires cool to intermediate conditions, ideally ranging from 65-75°F (18-24°C) during the day, with a necessary drop in temperature at night to encourage robust growth and flowering.
• Humidity: High humidity is critical, generally requiring 70% or more, due to the lack of water-storing pseudobulbs. Constant air circulation must be provided to prevent fungal issues associated with high moisture.
• Watering: Requires constant moisture and should never be allowed to dry out completely. Water frequently (every 1-3 days depending on the medium and climate). Use water that is low in dissolved solids, such as rainwater or purified water.

This orchid is highly sought after by collectors for the fascinating mechanical movement of its labellum. It is best grown mounted on cork or in small pots with a very fine, well-draining, but moisture-retentive substrate like fine bark mixed with sphagnum moss.
