Information

Philodendron pendulatum

Philodendron pendulatum

Philodendron pendulatum is a rare and gracefully distinctive warm-growing aroid species from the tropical forests of Ecuador. Its name — pendulatum, meaning "hanging" or "pendulous" in Latin — refers to the drooping, cascading habit of its leaves or stems, giving the plant a flowing, almost weeping elegance that is quite unlike the upright or climbing habit of most philodendrons. A species that brings movement and a sense of tropical lushness to any space it inhabits.

Features

  • Foliage: Elongated, rich green leaves with a graceful pendulous or cascading habit — the defining characteristic of the species
  • Plant size: 35–45 cm — a well-established specimen already displaying the species' distinctive drooping form
  • Growth habit: Pendulous to semi-climbing; works beautifully in hanging baskets or elevated positions where the cascading leaves can be appreciated
  • Family: Araceae (Philodendron genus)
  • Origin: Ecuador — warm tropical forests

Care Guide

  • Light: Moderate to bright indirect light; avoid direct sun which can scorch the foliage
  • Temperature: Warm, between 18°C and 30°C (64°F – 86°F); protect from cold drafts and temperatures below 15°C
  • Watering: Keep evenly moist; allow the top inch of soil to dry between waterings
  • Humidity: High, 65–80%; thrives in humid tropical conditions
  • Soil: Rich, chunky aroid mix with excellent drainage; particularly effective in a hanging basket or elevated planter

While most philodendrons reach upward, Philodendron pendulatum chooses to cascade — and the effect is stunning. Its flowing, pendulous leaves bring a sense of movement and tropical abundance that few aroids can match. A rare and graceful species from Ecuador that will stop visitors in their tracks.
