Description

Description

A bicolor form of one of the most celebrated miniature orchids in cultivation, Den. cuthbertsonii f. bicolor displays two contrasting tones on its remarkably long-lasting flowers — blooms that can persist for months on the plant, an extraordinary trait within the genus. Its compact, mat-forming growth makes it ideal for mounted culture or shallow pots. This plant is offered in a larger-than-standard commercial size.

  • Light: Bright indirect light with 40–60% shade cloth; tolerates more light than most miniatures but avoid direct midday sun.
  • Temperature: Cool grower. Daytime 58–68°F (14–20°C), nighttime 48–55°F (9–13°C); cool nights are essential to trigger and sustain blooming.
  • Humidity: 75–90%; constant high humidity with excellent air movement is critical — a terrarium or cool greenhouse is ideal.
  • Watering: Keep roots consistently moist; mounted plants may require daily misting in dry conditions.

Additional Notes

Found in mossy montane forests at elevations of 2,000–3,500 meters in New Guinea; best grown mounted on tree fern or cork bark with a thin layer of sphagnum moss over the roots.
