Information

Cavendishia nobilis

A species from the cloud forests of Ecuador. It grows as an epiphytic to semi-epiphytic shrub with leathery, lanceolate to elliptic leaves and slender, arching stems that produce erect, tubular floral buds — a striking display of form even before the flowers open fully.

  • Light: Bright indirect light with 50–60% shade cloth; tolerates brief morning sun but should be protected from intense midday exposure.
  • Temperature: 59–75°F (15–24°C); an intermediate grower that thrives in the cool, humid conditions of Andean cloud forests and dislikes prolonged heat.
  • Humidity: 70–90%; consistently high humidity is essential for vigorous growth and to support the development of flower buds.
  • Watering: Water thoroughly when the top of the substrate begins to dry; ensure excellent drainage, as the roots are sensitive to prolonged saturation.
  • Growth Habit: An epiphytic to semi-epiphytic shrub with a sprawling to arching habit, producing multiple slender stems that elongate over time. It performs well mounted or in a basket with open, airy substrate, and rewards patience with seasonal flushes of tubular flowers along the stems.

Additional Notes

Best grown in a coarse, well-draining epiphytic mix of bark, perlite, and sphagnum. Excellent air circulation is key to preventing fungal issues at the root zone. Shipped bare root, well-established.
