Information

Begonia bipinnatifida

A species from the cloud forests of Southeast Asia, first described by J.J. Smith in 1906. It produces deeply bipinnatilobate leaves with finely dissected, toothed segments carried on upright, fleshy stems — a striking architectural form rarely seen in the genus.

  • Light: Bright indirect light with 50–70% shade cloth; avoid direct sun, which scorches the delicate leaf segments.
  • Temperature: 60–77°F (16–25°C); a warm grower that appreciates stable temperatures and good air circulation.
  • Humidity: 60–80%; high ambient humidity keeps the fine foliage turgid and prevents tip browning.
  • Watering: Water thoroughly when the top layer of substrate begins to dry; avoid waterlogging, as the fleshy stems are susceptible to rot.
  • Growth Habit: An upright, terrestrial to semi-epiphytic species with a clumping, multi-stemmed habit. The deeply dissected, bipinnatilobate leaves emerge on fleshy, erect petioles, giving the plant a bold, sculptural presence that stands out among foliage plants.

Additional Notes

Best grown in a well-draining mix of fine bark, perlite, and a small amount of sphagnum to retain moderate moisture. Performs well in shallow pots with excellent drainage. Shipped bare root, well-established.
