Information

Barkeria skinneri

Barkeria skinneri is a stunning deciduous epiphytic orchid native to Ecuador, celebrated for its graceful sprays of vibrant blooms that light up the fall and winter months. Grown on cork bark or in open baskets, this orchid brings a touch of the cloud forest into your home or greenhouse.

Care Guide

  • Light: Bright, indirect light is ideal. A few hours of gentle morning or late-afternoon sun are welcome and will encourage blooming.
  • Temperature: Thrives in intermediate to warm conditions — daytime temperatures of 20–28°C (68–82°F) with nighttime drops to 10–15°C (50–59°F). That temperature swing is key to triggering flowering.
  • Humidity: Aim for 50–70% relative humidity. A humidifier, regular misting, or a well-ventilated greenhouse will keep this orchid happy.
  • Watering: Water generously during the active growing season, letting the substrate dry slightly between waterings. Pull back significantly in winter when the plant enters dormancy and sheds its leaves — this is completely normal.
  • Mounting: Best grown mounted on cork bark or in open baskets with a fast-draining substrate to mimic its natural epiphytic habitat.

Whether you're a seasoned orchid collector or just beginning your journey, Barkeria skinneri rewards attentive care with a spectacular seasonal display that makes every bloom worth the wait.
