Information

Barbosella portillae

Barbosella portillae is a rare and endearing miniature epiphytic orchid described by Luer in 1977, native to the intermediate-elevation forests of the Andes at around 1,000 meters. A species with a special connection to Ecuador, it bears the name portillae in honor of the Portilla family — longtime supporters of Ecuadorian orchid research and conservation. Like its relatives in the genus, it is a compact, creeping plant that produces small but characterful flowers, perfectly suited to terrarium culture and the growing community of miniature orchid enthusiasts who appreciate botanical rarity and the stories behind a name.

Care Guide

  • Light: Low to moderate indirect light. Avoid direct sun, which will scorch the delicate foliage. It thrives in the shaded, humid conditions of a terrarium or enclosed growing case.
  • Temperature: Cool to intermediate. Daytime temperatures of 18–25°C (64–77°F) with cooler nights of 12–15°C (54–59°F) replicate its natural Andean habitat well.
  • Humidity: High humidity of 70–80% is essential. A terrarium or enclosed humid environment is strongly recommended for this cool-growing miniature.
  • Watering: Keep the substrate consistently moist but not soggy. Allow it to dry very slightly between waterings and reduce frequency during winter.
  • Mounting: Grows beautifully mounted on cork bark or in a small pot with a well-draining substrate — good airflow around the roots is important.

A miniature with meaning, Barbosella portillae is a rare Andean gem for terrarium collectors and those who love orchids with a story — grown with care at Ecuagenera and ready to bring a touch of cloud forest magic to your collection.
